US lawmakers have officially asked Facebook to stop the launch of Libra, its recently announced cryptocurrency. Exactly, they want to “immediately cease implementation plans” of this digital currency that can be used for payment in applications such as WhatsApp or Messenger, among other platforms.
In a letter addressed to the head of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, also to the general director of Operations, Sheryl Sandberg, and to the head of the Calibra subsidiary, David Marcus, the representative Maxine Waters, president of the Committee of Financial Services of the House of Representatives, calls for the temporary halt of the project while the United States Congress and regulators investigate potential risks.
The letter, which is signed by both the chairwoman of the Financial Services Committee of the House of Representatives and the leaders of the Finance subcommittee, points out that leaving products and services such as these poorly regulated and without sufficient supervision can pose “systemic risks that would put endangered the financial stability of the United States and the world. ”
